We want to reduce garbage thrown away in landfills and waste-to-energy facilities. Learn how we plan to do this.
Let's reduce city waste.
Let's reduce city waste.

Overview

Minneapolis is widely recognized as a regional and national leader in waste reduction and recycling. We can still do more. Our goal to to reduce — and someday end— what we throw out in landfills or waste-to-energy facilities.

Our timeline

  • 50% recycling and organics recycling (composting) by 2020
  • 80% recycling and organics recycling by 2030

By achieving zero waste, we:

  • Serve as better stewards of our environment
  • Can grow our economy and advance our work in environmental justice

Zero Waste Plan

garbage, recycling, organics carts and yard waste bags outside of someone's home

In December 2017, the City Council adopted a Zero Waste Plan. The plan's goals are to:

  • Educate residents and businesses about available programs.
  • Create new opportunities to reduce waste and recycle more.

By increasing awareness and opportunity, we can divert more material from the trash.
