Minneapolis Police Academy

All officers must go through training at our academy and in the field.

Academy training

You attend the Minneapolis Police Academy training

  • 14- to 16-weeks
  • Monday through Friday

You will take part in physical fitness training and learn about police:

  • Operations
    • Patrol Operations
    • Emergency Vehicle Operations
  • Responses
    • Defensive tactics
    • Medical response
    • Mental illness and crisis intervention
    • Crime scene response and investigations
  • Administrative functions
    • Report writing
    • Computer systems
  • Interaction with the public
    • Community relations
    • Procedural Justice
    • Ethics

Field officer training

For the first six months after you complete the academy you will be evaluated.

You will work:

  • Days, nights, weekends and holidays
  • One-on-one with a training officer
  • Responding to 911 calls
  • Rotating every month to a new assignment

On-going police officer training

Our department provides yearly in-service training for all officers. 

You will have an opportunity to pursue training in areas like:

  • Leadership
  • Canine
  • Mounted patrol
  • DUI enforcement
  • Bicycle Rapid Response Team
  • Peer support
  • Range
  • Narcotics investigations
