Council Member Steve Fletcher

About Steve Fletcher

Steve Fletcher was elected on November 7, 2017 to a four-year term representing Minneapolis Ward 3 - the creative and economic heart of Minneapolis - on the Minneapolis City Council. As Ward 3’s City Council Member, Fletcher represents the residents of the following Minneapolis neighborhoods: Beltrami, Bottineau, Downtown East, part of Downtown West, Marcy-Holmes, Nicollet Island-East Bank, the North Loop, Sheridan, St. Anthony East, St. Anthony West.

Council Member Fletcher’s career has included work in the private sector, the arts, non-profits, and politics – a breadth of experience that reflects the range of activity and interests in the 3rd Ward. Fletcher has long specialized in media and technology: first for his own small company based in the Warehouse District in the mid-90’s, then for startups in Minnesota and California, and most recently for his own consultancy in the last three years, leading digital media and data projects for a mix of private sector and non-profit clients.

In 2010, Steve served as the founding executive director of MN Neighborhoods Organizing for Change – a local grassroots movement-building hub that has gained national recognition for its social justice-oriented organizing and policy wins. For his work with NOC, he was named Grassroots Solutions' 2011 Organizer of the Year. He also served as Executive Director of Minnesota 2020, a progressive think tank that under his leadership played an important communications and research role in critical statewide policy debates.

A proud graduate of St. Louis Park High School in 1995 and of the University of Minnesota's highly-regarded American Studies program in 2004, Fletcher went on to earn a Masters in Philosophy in American Studies at New York University, where he studied and taught Metropolitan Studies, in 2009.

He and his wife, Heather, live with their dog, Senator, in Downtown East, where Heather works as as an artist and teaches at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. A deeply rooted Ward 3 couple, Steve and Heather had their first date at the Sample Room and got engaged on the Stone Arch Bridge.
