How it works

We have three programs to help plant more trees on private property. Learn about our programs.

Spring 2024 tree sale

The Spring City Tree Lottery is closed.

If you're selected, you’ll get an email in April with information on how to order your tree(s).

Trees must be picked up on either May 18 or 19.

Green Zones residents

Residents in Minneapolis Green Zones may qualify for a free tree. This program is ongoing. You can apply for a tree any time during the year.

To qualify, you must:

  • Live in a Green Zone
  • Have enough green space for the tree(s)
  • Commit to watering your tree every week for the first three years

We will work with you to select the best tree and spot to plant it.

Businesses and organizations

We partner with Tree Trust to provide low cost trees and professionally plant them on your business property.

You can apply for tree(s) anytime during the year. We plant trees in the spring and fall.

To qualify for this program you must have:

  • Enough green space for the tree or trees
  • An outdoor water connection or alternative plan for watering the trees
  • A plan for maintaining and pruning the trees

Past tree sale participant survey

Over 25,000 people have planted trees all over Minneapolis since the tree sale started in 2006.

With the large number of trees planted, it is hard to keep track of how they are doing.

Take the census

This summer, the City Trees program is taking inventory of all trees from past sales to see whether they have survived.

We cannot do this inventory completely on our own. We are calling on past participants for their help to track our trees.

Complete the City Trees survey to help us gather better information on the health of our trees.
