The Hmong in Minneapolis

1975The first wave of Hmong refugees started to arrive in the United States.
1979The first Hmong families arrived to Minneapolis. Ge and Youa Vang were one of the first three families to settle in the city. The first house they lived in was 239 Irving Ave N, Minneapolis, MN (located in Ward 5).
1980The second wave of Hmong refugees started to arrive in the United States. Several families settled in the Phillips-Elliot neighborhood, making it a primary destination for many.
1986Shoua Cha was the first Hmong sworn as a police officer in Minneapolis.
1986-1994Between 1986-1994, more Hmong refugees arrived in the third wave.
2004-2006The most recent wave of Hmong refugees arrived, with approximately 5,000 settling in Minnesota.  
2013Blong Yang was the first Hmong-American elected to the Minneapolis City Council.
