Pet adoption

Animals from our City of Minneapolis shelter are looking for forever homes.

Pre-adoptions for cats and dogs

You can now “call dibs” on a pet during their stray hold period.
Through pre-adoption, you can choose a cat or dog before they become available for general adoption.

How it works

  • To pre-adopt, you must visit the shelter in person to meet the animal.
  • If the animal’s owner does not reclaim them during the stray hold, your pre-adoption moves forward.
  • Once the pet is spayed or neutered, we’ll contact you to schedule an adoption appointment for the day after their surgery.

It’s a great way to get a head start on welcoming your new best friend home.

Who can apply

You can apply to adopt a pet from our shelter if you:

  • Are at least 18-years-old
  • Can show a valid government-issued ID with your current address
  • Have knowledge and consent of all adults living in your household
  • Have your landlord’s consent to bring an animal onto the property
  • Understand that all other pets in your house must be up to date on their rabies vaccine
  • Understand that we have the right to refuse the adoption of any animal
  • Have no unpaid fines or citations from Animal Care & Control

If it's not a good match

If the pet you adopt is not a good match for you and your family, you can return them.

  • If you return the pet within 14 days, we will refund the adoption fee.
  • If you return the pet after 14 days, we will not refund the adoption fee.
  • We will work to find new homes for all returned pets.

How to apply

To adopt a pet:

We do not require an appointment to adopt an animal. However, if the animal's listing says that it is currently in a foster home, please call us to make an appointment to meet the animal at MACC.

View available pets online, then visit us at the shelter during the hours listed at the bottom of the page. Complete an application when you come to the shelter. The kennel areas are currently not open to the public.

If there's an adoptable animal who is a good fit for you, you can apply and take it home with you on the same day.

If there is an animal that is on stray hold, you can apply to pre-adopt it. If the animal is not claimed by its owner by the end of the stray hold period, we will contact you to set up an adoption appointment after we spay or neuter the animal.
