Minneapolis Police Department Data Practices Request

This is a formal request to the Minneapolis Police Department for access to government data under the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 13.

Requests are not required to be in writing, nor is the requestor required to provide their name or an explanation as to why the request is being made. However, if you choose not to provide contact information, the City will not be able to inform you when the requested data is available. If you do not wish to submit a written request, please contact the MPD Records Information Unit at 612-673-2961.

Requests must be clear enough to enable the City to conduct a meaningful search. Please include as much descriptive information in the request as is available, such as case numbers, date ranges, addresses, names, etc. The City may ask clarifying questions about the request in order to respond to the request fully and in a timely manner.

If you are requesting data on behalf of another person, depending on your relationship to that person (the data subject), you may be required provide a letter or release form signed by the data subject, authorizing the release of their private data to you.  At this time, there is no way to include attachments with the following on-line data request.  The requestor will be contacted if an authorization form is needed, which can then be scanned and emailed, faxed or sent by U.S. mail to the MPD Records Information Unit.

  • I understand that the City is under no obligation to create a document to satisfy my request if no such data exists.
  • Inspection of data is free. However, the City may charge for physical or electronic copies of data provided to a requestor.
  • The City may redact or withhold not public information from the requestor. In such instances, the statutory basis for such actions will be provided.
