Central's percentage of people in poverty was above Minneapolis' percentage between 1979 and 1999, and it increased from 1979 to 1999. In 1999, 29 percent of the neighborhood's residents lived below the poverty level. The proportion of people 65 and older living in poverty in Central was much lower. The neighborhood and city percentages of people in this group were similar during this time.

Central's percentages of all families and families with children under 18 living in poverty were higher than Minneapolis' percentages between 1980 and 2000. The neighborhood and city percentages of families living in poverty peaked in 1990, as did families with children living in poverty.
