Truth in Housing FAQs
A re-inspection is required if the Truth in Housing (TISH) process indicated the need for repairs. Use the frequently asked questions (FAQs) list below to answer your TISH re-inspection process.
Who inspects the house after the repairs are done?
After the required repairs on a property are completed, a re-inspection must be done to verify that all the needed work was done correctly.
- If the required repairs need a plumbing or mechanical permit, a City inspector will need to inspect that work. Learn more about getting a permit.
- If the required repairs need an electrical permit, a State of MN inspector will need to inspect that work. Obtain an electrical permit online or call 651-284-5026.
- If the required repairs do not need a permit, the evaluator who did the initial evaluation will do the re-inspection.
- If a safety check is needed a contractor Licensed in that trade needs to look at the system and fill out the appropriate safety check forms. In order for the contractor to verify that the system is working correctly and safely, additional work may need to be performed, and permits may be required.
How is the re-inspection scheduled?
- If the required repair needed a plumbing or mechanical permit, call the City inspector whose name is on page 2 of your permit.
- All necessary permits must be pulled and safety checks completed and submitted to the Truth-in Sale of Housing office before a re-inspection can be scheduled.
- If the required repair needed an electrical permit, call 651-284-5064 or the inspector on the permit.
- If the required repairs do not need a permit, call the evaluator who did the initial evaluation.
How much does the re-inspection cost?
- There is a fee for a permit, based on what work is to be done. The permit must be obtained before the work is begun, and then a City of Minneapolis inspector inspects after the work is complete. Normally, there is no additional fee for inspection of completed permit work.
- For non-permit items, the private evaluator will charge for the re-inspection.
- Licensed contractors will charge for a safety check.
Note: If an appointment is missed, or if repeated inspections are needed, the inspector or evaluator may require additional fees.
When does the re-inspection need to be done?
The buyer has 90 days from the date of closing to complete the required repairs and get them re-inspected. An extension can be requested by filling out and submitting the extension form before the 90 day due date.
