Animal Adoptions

Minneapolis Animal Care & Control (MACC) is a full-service shelter. In 2015 1,291 animals were adopted to good homes last year or were transferred to rescue groups.  In all, roughly 4,000 animals or more come to Minneapolis Animal Care & Control every year.  By law, we keep all stray dogs and cats at least five (5) days to allow their owners to search and reclaim them.  However, if the original owner is not found, animals are made available for adoption to new homes.

Adoption Application

To make it easier for you, feel free to complete your adoption application (pdf) at home prior to arriving at the animal shelter.

Please note that not all animals listed on our "Adoptable" link can be adopted to the general public.

If a cat is in the Feline Kitten (FK) area of the shelter, it will be transferred to one of our rescue partners. Kittens less than seven weeks of age are too vulnerable to be placed with the general public. We believe rescue groups are best able to care for the cats until they are weaned from their mothers (often needing bottle feeding).

If the dog is in the Kennel Holding (KH) ward, it will also be transferred to one of our rescue groups for placement. These dogs are often power breeds (pit bulls, rottweilers) or shy/fearful dogs. Currently, the City of Minneapolis does not have the capacity to thoroughly screen potential adopters for these animals. Our rescue partners do a far more extensive background check and screening of applications to foster or adopt.
