Traffic Management Center

The City of Minneapolis Traffic & Parking Services Division operates its own state-of-the-art Traffic Management Center (TMC)

Two employees in the traffic management center

What our staff does

  • Monitors traffic
  • Conducts traffic studies
  • Adjusts signal timing
  • Responds to maintenance issues

In Minneapolis there are more than

  • 800 traffic signals
  • 40 crossings with pedestrian flashers
  • 60 pan tilt zoom (PTZ) cameras for monitoring traffic

At the TMC, staff can also monitor MnDOT freeway cameras and Minneapolis Police cameras.  Staff can investigate maintenance requests using the camera at the TMC to efficiently dispatch crews to make repairs.

The City operates its own communication network which allows staff to view in real time the traffic signal controller at most of the City’s traffic signals and make timing adjustments without having to physically travel to each location.
