There are three different types of Promotions that you can use based on what images you have and what type of content you're trying to promote.

  • Promotion
  • Promotion (Large)
  • Sign Up Promotion

Icons

Most promotions require an icon. You have the option to choose icons based on your content's topic or type.

A large promotion

When to use

You should use a promotion when you want to "advertise" something, like a campaign, newsletter, program or different area of the website.

It is a good content type for crosslinking content between different areas of the website.

Think of a promotion like a teaser. Use it when you want to catch a reader's attention and invite them to read more about something.

Sign Up Promotion

This promotion content type works best for situations when you want to direct a visitor to take an action (rather than get more information.) The Sign Up Promotion allows you to add two links.

  1. The primary call to action.
  2. A supporting link, such as one to terms of service or more information.

Promotion (Large)

This promotion content type is perfect for wide, dynamic photography and a shorter description.

Promotion

This promotion content type works best for smaller, square images. Because of its narrow width, it is more subdued than the larger version and works well when you want to group more than one promotion together.

When to consider something else

You may want to use a listing content type instead if you want to highlight a group of any of the following:

  • Articles
  • Events
  • News
  • Program/Initiatives
  • Projects

Best practices

Do

  • Keep the heading and description brief and action-oriented.
  • Use both an image and an icon if you can.
  • Follow best practices for using images.
  • It's okay to stack multiple small promotions or sign-up promotions together.

Don't

  • Don't use generic link text like "read more" or "click here."
  • Avoid using more than 1 large promotion on a page.

Events

  • Use when you want to promote a big special event: The Promotion type is appropriate when you are promoting a special event. However, it must be used with an Event content type. Don't use a promotion in place of an event listing. 
  • Do not use when you want to promote a smaller, more frequent event: When you have a recurring event, just use the Event content type.  

Tips for writing a promotion

Heading

  • Use to get your visitors attention
  • Maximum 45 characters
  • No wrapping to a second line (on a laptop monitor)

Description

  • Use plain language
  • Keep it short — the longer it is the less it will get read

Call to action link text

  • Start with a verb
  • Keep to two or three words

Remember

The page you link to is where you want people to linger and get the details.

Make sure your image has descriptive alt text. Note: Alt text is required for any image on the website that conveys information.
