The Kelly House is a good example of the Spanish Eclectic style. It was built in 1927 for the family of Wayne and Gertrude Kelly. Wayne was the manager of the Kohler Company showroom in Minneapolis at the time. The Kohler Company is best known for its plumbing products. Gertrude was a Minneapolis school teacher. Minneapolis architect Roland R. Wilcken designed their home. Builders Nelson & Johnson constructed the building.
The Spanish Eclectic style became popular in the 1920s. It combines simple and ornate details. The house shows a mix of materials, textures, and colors. It has arched openings, beige stucco walls, decorative ironwork, a tan stone entry, and a red tiled roof. The style is eclectic because it pulls from various periods in Spain’s history. Features reflect Roman, Gothic, Moorish, Medieval, and Renaissance eras.
This house is different from other Minneapolis examples of this style. It still has many of its original features, including windows, doors, and decoration.
