You must follow these steps when selling a building with affordable rental housing.

Tell us about your plan to sell

Owners of affordable housing buildings must notify the following of any plans to sell the building.

  • Renters living in the building
  • The City of Minneapolis

Building owner requirements

Before you sell

The building owner must notify renters and the City of the proposed sale:

  • In writing 
  • Sixty days before you put the building up for sale

You must:

  • Create a Proposed Notice of Sale flier
  • Complete the Proposed Notice of Sale spreadsheet
  • Post the flier in a visible common area in the building you plan to sell
  • Send a flier and the spreadsheet to City's director of Community Planning and Economic Development

 

 

After you sell

The new owner of the building must notify renters and the City of new ownership:

  • In writing
  • Within 30 days of taking ownership

The Notice of New Ownership documents must be:

  • Distributed to each person renting an affordable housing unit in your building
  • The City's director of Regulatory Services

Protecting renters after the sale

Renters may be eligible for relocation assistance after the building is sold if the new owner:

  • Terminates or refuses to renew their lease without cause.
  • Increases rent or rescreens an existing affordable housing renter.

This protection is in place for three months after the transfer of ownership.
