Bicycle theft
You can report a lost or stolen bicycle and work with us to get your bicycle back.
What to do
If your bicycle is lost or stolen
- Register your bike's serial number and mark the bike as lost or stolen.
- Contact 311.
- File a police report.
- File an online police report.
- Make an in-person report at your local precinct. (Precincts do not take phone reports.)
- To inquire about recovered bicycles, call the Police Property & Evidence Unit.
We compare recovered bicycles to descriptions of bicycles and their serial numbers. We check for bicycles registered with Bike Index. If we find a match, we contact the bicycle owner. We can also search our database for bicycles that match your lost or stolen bicycle.
If you do not have your serial number
If you do not have your bicycle serial number, call the bike shop you bought it from. They may have the serial number on file.
To get your recovered bicycle back
- Pick up your bicycle from the Police Property & Evidence Unit.
- You'll need a valid state ID or driver's license, a police report filed with the Minneapolis Police Department, and proof of ownership such as a:
- Purchase receipt
- Serial number, registration number or operation identification (OPID) number
- Photo of the owner and the bike
