The Minneapolis Health Department is pleased to announce it has been reaccredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) for another five years.
Maintaining accreditation status demonstrates the department’s commitment to meeting PHAB’s national standards. This recognition affirms dedication to improving and advancing the health of the Minneapolis community.
“From tackling climate change to preventing childhood lead poisoning, the Minneapolis Health Department never backs down from a challenge,” said Mayor Jacob Frey. “With bold new initiatives like the Mobile Medical Unit and the nation’s first biochar facility, the team continues to push boundaries and deliver results. Congratulations to Health Commissioner Damōn Chaplin and everyone working to keep our city healthy—this reaccreditation is well deserved.”
Serving the community
Since first being accredited in 2016, Health Department staff have been proud to uphold the national standards of excellence as a fully accredited health department. Accreditation reinforces our credibility and commitment to our community.
The Health Department is grateful for the city’s ongoing support as we continue our mission to protect and promote building healthier communities.
“Every member of our Minneapolis community deserves the support of their local public health department, and we are honored to be recognized as a fully accredited Health Department meeting national standards,” said Commissioner Damōn Chaplin, Minneapolis Health Department. “We are dedicated to aligning our operations with nationally recognized, evidence-based standards, leading to better health outcomes for our community. We thank the Public Health Accreditation Board for validating the high standard of service we deliver to the Minneapolis Community by reaccrediting our department.”
About accreditation
The non-profit PHAB works to advance and transform public health practice by championing performance improvement, strong infrastructure, and innovation. PHAB’s voluntary accreditation program, which receives support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sets standards against which the nation’s governmental public health departments can continuously improve the quality of their services and performance.
Public health accreditation through PHAB measures a health department's performance against a set of nationally recognized, practice-focused, and evidence-based standards:
- PHAB’s accreditation framework is aligned with the 10 Essential Public Health Services (EPHS) framework, with equity at the center.
- Accredited departments actively promote policies, systems, and overall community conditions that foster optimal health for all.
- PHAB-accredited health departments demonstrate leadership by subjecting their work to peer review and using feedback to enhance community services.
"We are pleased to see the Minneapolis Health Department, along with many others, successfully maintaining their five-year PHAB accreditation," said PHAB President and CEO Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MD, MPH, FACEP. "This demonstrates that accreditation is not just a one-time achievement but an ongoing commitment to excellence. By maintaining accreditation, these health departments reaffirm their dedication to continuous improvement and community health."
