The City of Minneapolis is kicking off “Welcoming Week” Sept. 13-22. Welcoming Week is a nationwide celebration that brings residents together for events fostering mutual understanding and a sense of belonging for all, including residents born outside of the United States. This year’s theme in the City is “We’re All In” as the City honors everyone that calls the City of Lakes home.
“This year’s Welcoming Week theme, ‘We’re All In,’ couldn’t be more fitting,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who echoed that statement in this video message. “As a city, we’re all in when we uplift and celebrate our broad cultural heritage. We’re all in when we ensure every resident—new or old—feels safe, respected and valued. Welcoming Week reminds us that there is strength in diversity, and it reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that every resident of Minneapolis feels they truly belong here.”
Throughout the week, the City will host various events and has several ways to share information. The week kicks off with a Citizenship and Immigration Resource Fair on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 777 Lake St. It will include citizenship information, immigration legal services, housing and healthcare aid and workers’ rights help. Mayor Frey will also join other city, state and federal leaders for a Citizenship Day oath ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at St. Paul’s Union Depot at 2 pm. Newly naturalized residents will take the oath to become United States citizens.
“Welcoming Week is an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and diversity that exists in our City. We recognize that by embracing a spirit of welcome, we nurture community strength and potential,” said Michelle Rivero, director of the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA) for the City of Minneapolis. “When we work together to cultivate a sense of belonging through Welcoming Week, we ensure that all residents, including our newest residents born abroad, are able to achieve lives of safety, dignity and opportunity in Minneapolis. We hope this week ignites a spark for transformational change, participation and growth. We encourage residents to learn more and join us.”
