Event connects community members with critical services

The Minneapolis Department of Regulatory Services is hosting a Renter Rights Resource Fair. It is on Tuesday, June 4, at the Minneapolis Public Service Building, 505 4th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55415, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The City encourages renters and rental property owners to drop in at any time during the event. At 12:30 p.m. HOME Line, a nonprofit tenant advocacy agency, will present about tenant and landlord responsibilities.

“Whether you’ve rented here your entire life, are a college student or an immigrant, the City offers critical resources and is here to support you,” said Demetrice Walker, manager of the Housing Liaison Team in Regulatory Services.

More than a dozen local organizations and government agencies will be at the event, including the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, HOME Line, Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, Urban League Twin Cities and Arrive Ministries. City teams responsible for ensuring safe housing conditions and providing compassionate, guiding enforcement will connect attendees with critical services and help answer questions.

Attendees will have access to Spanish, Somali and Hmong interpreters, as well as a free meal.

Ensuring safe and comfortable housing for the 51% of Minneapolis residents who rent their homes is a priority for the City. In recent years, the City Council has continued to approve greater protections for Minneapolis renters. Renter rights span issues such as security deposit limits, prohibiting retaliation for reporting an issue, fire and safety conditions, and more.

In 2023, the City launched the “Know Your Renting Rights” campaign to further educate community members about renter protections and what to expect when contacting the City for help. This event serves as a continuation of these engagement efforts.

“Any time that we can improve living conditions for a renter or support a property owner who is facing challenges, we’re reminded of the importance of community-centered education,” shared Josie Shardlow, Director of Operations and Engagement, Regulatory Services. “It’s in this spirit that we’re excited to host the Renter Rights Resource.
