The City of Minneapolis Service Center has become the newest home for Metro Transit riders to enroll in the Transit Assistance Program (TAP). With the unanimous approval of the Minneapolis City Council, the Minneapolis Service Center launched the TAP program in June.
“At the Minneapolis Service Center, we provide important City services to all residents and visitors to meet their wide variety of needs, including removing language barriers and addressing accessibility challenges. Our partnership with Metro Transit gives us the opportunity to further serve and better reach community members in a way that goes beyond just City services,” said Breanna Phelps, Operations Manager for 311 Service Center.
Affordable options
This partnership aims to address transportation equity by providing affordable transit options to low-income residents, ensuring that everyone has access to reliable public transportation. With a downtown location near high traffic areas like the Government Center and Metro’s Blue and Green light rail lines, the Minneapolis Service Center will be easily accessible by thousands.
"We are thrilled the City of Minneapolis is now our largest community partner," said Andrea Kiepe, TAP Coordinator for Metro Transit. "The Service Center now allows people to sign up with a paystub or tax return. Instead of limiting TAP to people already receiving social benefits, many more people with lower incomes can now apply. That makes TAP more accessible and equitable for metro area residents."
The TAP program offers discounted transit fares to qualifying individuals, making it easier for them to commute to work, school, medical appointments, and other essential activities. Eligible participants receive a TAP card, which allows them to ride buses and trains for just $1 per trip, significantly lower than the standard fare.
“We are excited to play a crucial role in supporting our community members through the TAP program by expanding its reach at the Minneapolis Service Center. This collaboration underscores our city's commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable transportation system,” shared Mwende Nzimbi, Director for 311 Service Center department.
