January is Radon Action Month

January 9, 2024

Radon is responsible for nearly 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the U.S. every year. Radon Action Month every January helps raise awareness and encourages people to test their homes for radon.

Every home should be tested

The only way to know how much radon is in your home is to do a test. Two in five Minnesota homes test high for radon. Closing our homes in the winter for heat makes winter a good time to test for radon levels.

About radon

Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that can cause lung cancer. Radon:

  • Comes from the soil and rock surrounding the home’s foundation.
  • Enters a home through cracks and holes in the basement floor.
  • Is the second leading cause of lung cancer.

You can buy a low-cost test kit from the State.
