Sidewalk repair project details

Learn how we select areas to repair sidewalks and how we make the repairs.

How we select sidewalk project areas

What we consider

The Sidewalk Inspections team chooses project locations based on inspections.

We select locations based on many factors:

  • Length of time since we made sidewalk repairs in the area
  • To coordinate with planned and recently completed projects
  • How severe sidewalk issues are in an area

Note: the areas that we plan to fix may change.

Why we’re doing this work now

The City inspects sidewalks by neighborhood. We do this on a rotating basis every 20- to 25-years.

The sidewalks we replace

During the inspection period, we replace sidewalk panels that are:

  • Defective
  • Have conditions that put people at risk

Planning the work with other projects

We combine our work with other construction projects done by:

  • The City of Minneapolis
  • Other government
  • Private groups

Construction work we do

How we repair sidewalks

When we replace sidewalks, the work usually means we:

  • Saw-cut

  • Remove defective sidewalk panels mechanically

  • Install formwork

  • Place new concrete sidewalk

We may remove and replace grass

  • In most cases, we'll remove a 4- to 6-inch-wide area of grass and soil along both sides of the defective sidewalk.
  • This is necessary to install the construction forms to build the new sidewalk.

Once construction is complete

We'll clean the affected area and add black dirt and grass seed to the adjacent space.
