Project overview

The City will construct 0.2 miles of Nicollet Avenue between Lake Street and Cecil Newman Lane.

This street will provide access to the New Nicollet Redevelopment on the former Kmart site and connect Lake Street and Nicollet Avenue.

Upgrades will include:

New sidewalks
ADA pedestrian ramps
Bicycle accommodations
New pavement
New curb and gutter
Utility improvements

The project will also include as needed:

Signal improvements
New signage
New pavement markings

Project updates

On May 9th, 2024, Minneapolis City Council approved the New Nicollet Ave Concept Layout as presented to the Climate and Infrastructure Committee on Thursday, April 18^th and Thursday, May 2^nd.

On May 15, 2024, the Mayor approved the New Nicollet Ave Concept Layout.

The project team held an open house at the Abyssinia Center on Thursday, March 7^th, 2024 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm.

The project team held an open house at the former Kmart site (along Lake Street between First and Blaisdell Ave) on Tuesday, October 10th, 2023 from 4:30pm – 6:30pm.

Project schedule

The city will need to complete site work and infrastructure projects to aid in the redevelopment of the former Kmart site. The following site work has been completed to date.

Grocery store demolition (Fall 2022)
