Cedar Ave at Nokomis Pkwy and Edgewater Blvd
Pilot project update
The pilot has been well received so we are leaving the bollards at Edgewater in place until we can install a permanent solution.
Project overview
Minneapolis Public Works, Minneapolis Park Board, and Hennepin County improved the intersection of Cedar Ave at Lake Nokomis Pkwy and Edgewater Blvd in South Minneapolis. The goal was to reduce vehicle travel speeds and increase safety for all users.
In the fall of 2024, a concrete pedestrian refuge median was built on the north leg of the traffic signal. The project team is exploring design options to make the bollards at Edgewater permanent in 2025.
We are exploring design options for long-term improvements to Cedar Ave/Lake Nokomis Pkwy.
A community meeting was held January 25, 2024.
These short-term improvements were installed in summer 2023:
- Closed median at Edgewater Blvd - right in, right out - for a 6- week evaluation period
- Installed bollard median on the north leg of Cedar Ave/Lake Nokomis Pkwy intersection
- Converted the two northbound through lanes to one through and one left turn lane
- Installed northbound left turn lane arrow
- Installed eastbound right turn arrow
- Improved traffic signal visibility
- Collected before and after data
