18th Ave S bridge over Midtown Greenway
The City will improve the condition and safety of 18th Ave S bridge over Midtown Greenway.
Dates
2026
Project overview
-
The 18th Ave S bridge was built in 1916 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Saint Paul Railroad. It was constructed to help separate railroad traffic from city streets.
-
The 18th Avenue Bridge over the Midtown Greenway helps people and cars cross over the Midtown Greenway. The 18th Avenue Bridge is also labeled State Bridge L8923.
-
The bridge has three bays (or openings), and it's made of reinforced concrete. It has concrete supports on the sides and in the middle.
-
The overall bridge length is approximately 95 feet and the bridge width from curb to curb is 32 feet, with an 8 foot sidewalk on both sides of the bridge
-
Deficiencies and deterioration are evident in all major bridge components. This includes the bridge deck, superstructure, and substructure. Due to the age of the structure, deterioration will progressively get worse over time.
-
This project will improve the condition and safety of motor vehicles. Pedestrian and bicyclist traffic crossing the 18th Ave S bridge will be safer as well.
Traffic impacts
A recent check on the 18th Ave S. bridge over the Midtown Greenway found some problems with its structure. To keep the bridge working until it gets fixed in 2026, the city has to limit traffic to one lane. Vehicles over 26 tons can not use the bridge. To make this happen, the Public Works crew put up signs and concrete barriers to show the new traffic rules.
