Tips for enjoying your ride

There are lots of benefits to biking around town, but the best might be that it’s fun.

Consider these tips for scenic views, relaxing rides, and fully enjoying biking.

  • Enjoy the view.

Explore scenic bike routes along regional trails, parks, and riverfronts at a leisurely pace.

  • Plan for pit stops.

Find a new cafe, park, or scenic view where you can take a break and enjoy the adventure.

  • Cycle with friends.

There's fun and more safety when you ride in groups.

Tips to prepare

Here are some things to keep in mind to prepare your body and your bike for a safe and comfortable ride.

  • Find the right fit.

Making sure your bike fits you just right is key. It should be comfortable to reach the handlebars. Tweak the saddle height so your knees have a slight bend when the pedal is at its lowest point.

  • Gear up for your ride.

Make sure you have your helmet and closed-toed shoes before riding.

  • Stay visible.

When biking at night, wear some reflective gear and make sure your bike shines with front and rear lights.

Use hand signals to communicate with drivers and fellow bikers.

  • Check your tires.

Before you pedal, give those tires a check. If they're feeling deflated, pump them up and get rolling for a smooth ride ahead.

  • Dress in layers.

Uncertain about what to wear for the weather? Layering is key. As you pedal, you'll warm up naturally.

Tips for buying a bike

Whether you're a first time buyer or looking to upgrade, follow these tips for success at the bicycle shop.

  • Find the right type of bike.

Whether you're commuting, exercising, or off-roading, each purpose calls for a specific type of bike. Pick what's right for how you ride.

  • Ask for help at the shop.

Explain to a bike shop employee how you plan to ride, and they'll help find the right bike in your size.

  • Accessorize for safety.

Outfit your bike with all the safety essentials: reflectors, lights, a bell, and a solid lock. For a lighter, more enjoyable ride, switch to saddlebags and baskets.

  • Shop local.

When you shop locally, you not only enjoy convenient repairs and maintenance, but also support your community.
