The City is teaming up with a non-profit to collect people's stories about Minneapolis. Here's your chance have your story recorded for future.

The City of Minneapolis is partnering with a national non-profit, StoryCorps, to record and uplift stories about:

  • The murder of George Floyd
  • The unrest that followed
  • What those events meant for you, the City, the country and the world

This archive will document these events and their impact. It will help the city create a more equitable future.

Why participate

Recording your Minneapolis story with StoryCorps is an opportunity to:

  • Talk about the things that matter most with someone who has been important in your life.
  • Reflect on the past, think of the future and assess what matters.
  • Help others gain an understanding of the Minneapolis community.
  • Be part of history.

Prepare to tell your Minneapolis story.

  • Record and upload your own story through the StoryCorps website. 
  • Read the suggested talking points 
  • Check your email for updates.

Request an in-person interview in the mobile booth.

  • The StoryCorps mobile booth will be in town from May 13-22
  • Limited space is available

What to talk about

StoryCorp will provide a list of questions to inspire the conversation during your session. What you talk about during your recording is up to you.

Here are some conversation topics to consider:

  • What makes Minneapolis special to you?
  • Has there been a time when you felt a sense of belonging in the Minneapolis Community?
  • How did the murder of George Floyd and the civil unrest that followed change Minneapolis?
  • How did the murder of George Floyd and the civil unrest that followed change you if at all?

What to expect

Your conversation will be:

  • Free flowing
  • 40 minutes long
  • Shared with the City of Minneapolis if you give permission

Partnership

StoryCorps Studios

StoryCorps is a nonprofit that has meaningful conversations with people about their lives. They record conversations with people to create an oral history. Storycorps believes that everyone has an important story to tell. 

StoryCorps:

  • Will meet with an individual and, optionally, one other person
  • Record their perspectives in the person's own words
  • Archive authorized stories at the Library of Congress
  • Make the stories available online for future generations to see

Racial Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

The City of Minneapolis Racial Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (REIB) department is coordinating StoryCorps efforts. A lasting archive of Minneapolis stories is the goal.

REIB:

  • Will keep residents informed about this opportunity
  • Coordinate times for people meet with StoryCorps
  • Share the archived stories

By capturing your conversations, the City aims to:

  • Provide healing and empowerment
  • Inform racial equity work
  • Amplify community voices
