Explore a career in law enforcement

The Minneapolis Law Enforcement Explorers gives young adults the opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement. It is a non-profit program. There is no cost to join.

Our approach

Explorers will:

  • Participate in various everyday police scenarios through hands-on activities.
  • Perform mock police scenarios to compete in state and national conferences. 
  • Participate in community events, such as parades and police precinct open houses.

Explorers train in:

  • Burglary response
  • Domestic crisis intervention
  • Emergency first aid
  • Search and arrest
  • Traffic crash investigation
  • Traffic stop
  • Witness interviews

We are committed to having diverse candidates and welcome residents from all cultures to join. Our members have gone on to be a part of the Minneapolis Police Department as community service officers, recruits, officers, sergeants, and lieutenants.

Applicant requirements

You will:

  • Complete a background check
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA
  • Be 14 to 20 years old
  • Be enrolled in high school or college
  • Have an interest in law enforcement
  • Purchase own footwear

Hiring process

You will complete:

  • An in-person interview
  • A background check
  • Fingerprinting

The selection process takes about two to four weeks. 

If you pass the above steps, you will be an Explorer with our post. 

 

Class date and time

  • We meet at 4119 Dupont Ave N.
  • Classes are held every Monday, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • No classes on major holidays.
