Healthy Beverages

We help people choose healthier beverages to drink.

Why we do this work

Sugary drinks are the main source of added sugars in the American diet.

Drinking too many sugary beverages puts people at higher risk for serious health issues, such as:

  • Type II diabetes
  • Weight gain
  • Cavities

The beverage industry targets communities of color and youth with ads for sugary drinks. Sugar intake in these communities is high. That increases health disparities.

Actions we're taking

Promoting healthier beverages

As part of our work, we:

  • Spread awareness about the risks associated with sugary drinks
  • Encourage everyone to choose healthier beverages

Working with partners

We work with partners to:

  • Make sure healthy drink options are more appealing, readily available and affordable
  • Reduce the appeal, accessibility and affordability of sugary drinks
  • Explain the many benefits of drinking tap water

Our community work

Tap Water Ambassadors

  • Minneapolis tap water is considered one of the best city water supplies in the country.
  • Drinking tap water can help improve nutrition and make us healthier.

Unfortunately, many people in our city do not trust tap water. They prefer to drink bottled water and sugary drinks instead.

Educate and build trust

We are working with the Minneapolis Public Works Department and community partners called Tap Water Ambassadors to:

  • Educate people about the safety, quality and health advantages of drinking tap water
  • Build more trust within the community about drinking tap water

Rethink Your Drink

Healthy Living joined forces with more than 40 community organizations to create the ReThink Your Drink, Every Sip Counts campaign.

Increase awareness

Our goal is to increase awareness about the negative impact sugary beverages can have on our health.
