Our community work

Produce Rx

Food insecurity increases the risk of getting long-term conditions, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease

Many people find it hard to get enough affordable fruits and vegetables.

Clinic access to fruits and vegetables

In 2022, we partnered with four community clinics in the city to start the Produce Rx program. This program helped more than 180 people who:

  • Lacked access to fruits and veggies
  • Had chronic conditions

People who took part reported being better able to:

  • Manage their chronic condition
  • Have better diet quality
  • Have more food security

We are working to expand the program to reach more people.

Breastfeeding training for healthcare providers 

Breastfeeding is good for the health of both baby and the lactating parent. Lactating families need caring and reliable support to be successful.

Culturally appropriate support

We work with community partners to offer training for healthcare providers.

The training shows providers how to give parents lactation support that is:

  • Culturally appropriate
  • Sensitive
  • Respectful

Highrise Health Alliance

The Minneapolis Health Department and the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) jointly lead the Highrise Health Alliance (HHA).

The HHA brings together organizations to improve the health of people living in Minneapolis public housing. The organizations include:

  • Healthcare organizations
  • Non-profits
  • Health insurance companies

Examples of past HHA work

  • Organizing COVID and flu vaccination clinics
  • Organizing substance abuse recovery groups
  • Making it easier for residents to learn about and get access to healthcare resources
