Active Communities

We work to make it safe and easy for people to walk, bike and move around our community.

Why we do this work

Minneapolis is known as a great city for walking, biking and access to parks.

  • People in lower income neighborhoods do not have that same access.

More places to be active

According to Trust for Public Land, in Minneapolis neighborhoods with more people of color:

  • There is 60% less park space than mostly white neighborhoods.
  • People find it harder to be active because of concerns about safety, including:
    • Crime
    • Poorly maintained infrastructure

We're working to change that.

What we do

We support making changes to streets in priority neighborhoods so that it's safer and easier to:

  • Walk
  • Bike
  • Use public transportation
  • Get to places like schools, workplaces, stores and parks

Working with the community

  • We work with community members to have a say in changes to:
    • Streets
    • Parks
    • Bike trails
  • We create opportunities that are safe and enjoyable. We want to make it easy for people to be active in their everyday lives.
