A brownfield is any type of property that is known or suspected to be contaminated by a:
- Hazardous substance
- Pollutant
- Contaminant
The City helps developers and property owners prepare and submit grant proposals to obtain public funds for:
- Brownfield investigation
- Brownfield cleanup
Eligible projects and the City's role
Eligible projects
The following types of projects may be eligible for brownfield grants.
- Commercial and industrial
- Affordable housing and in limited cases, market rate housing
- Mixed use
- Parks and open space
The City's role
The City helps projects obtain funding from other public agencies.
In most cases:
- The City must be the grant applicant.
- The City Council must approve a resolution in support of the application.
- The property owner or developer seeking the funding must prepare their application.
- The City submits the application and administers the grant.

Pre-application and application deadlines
There are two deadlines.
- The first is for submitting your pre-application to the City.
- The second is for submitting your application to the organization that grants the funds.
