Overview

For the first time in over 100 years, the City of Minneapolis has a new form of government. In November 2021, Minneapolis voters approved the new form of government. In fall 2022, the City Council approved the new government structure. 

New government structure defined:

  • The mayor as the City's top executive
  • City Council as its main legislative and policy-making body

The mayor oversees the City’s executive functions. This provides a clear line of direction and better accountability and responsibility.

The mayor's cabinet  has three executive office positions. They are: 

  • City Attorney
  • City Operations Officer
  • Community Safety Commissioner

Child Friendly City

UNICEF recognized Minneapolis as the second "Child Friendly City" in the nation. This award honors cities committed to improving the lives of children.

The City of Minneapolis supports veteran employees and their families. The City was named the first "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon” organization in Minnesota.
