Property or evidence

We explain how to reclaim your property or evidence from the police.

Road construction in front of the Property and Evidence building

You can still access the building to retrieve your property. Review the road construction map before coming.

Overview

The Property and Evidence Unit maintains items as needed for court. We are also responsible for:

  • Keeping items safely stored

  • Returning property to owners as permitted by law

Property held as evidence

If your property is being held as evidence in a criminal case, it may not be available for release. You can contact the assigned officer for authorization. For help finding your case number, contact us.

Safekeeping of personnel property

Personal property held for safekeeping is kept for 60 days from the date of receipt. You or your designee are responsible to make arrangements for the release of property. Failure to do so may result in the disposal of the property.

Designee to pick up your property

If someone other than you as the owner of the property are picking up items, a notarized letter is required.

Unclaimed property

Disposal

Property may be disposed of if not claimed.

  • Bicycles are held for 30 days

  • All other property is held for 60 days

The Property and Evidence Unit staff make every effort to find and notify owners. We will send a letter to the owner's last known address advising that they must claim their property.

If property is not picked up during the 60-day period, it could be auctioned or destroyed.

Auctions

Some unclaimed items are auctioned. Auctions are between April and October at the Property and Evidence Warehouse.
