We respond to calls for service and enforce the law.
Overview
The Patrol Bureau includes all of the officers who:
- Watch over our City's neighborhoods day to day
- Respond to emergencies across the City
You may see us:
- On foot
- In a squad car
- Riding a bicycle or horse
- With a police dog
We focus on:
- Community policing
- Crime prevention
- Response to 911 calls
Each patrol officer is assigned to a specific precinct.
Special Operations & Intelligence Division
Our division consists of:
- Bomb squad
- Responds to incidents and potential threats involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive devices
- Conducts sweeps before major sporting events
- Helps other area law enforcement agencies
- Crisis negotiators
- Draw upon extensive training in crisis negotiating
- Respond to scenes after an individual has created a public safety risk to themselves or others in the immediate area
- SWAT
- Consists of highly-trained police officers
- Uses special weapons and tactics to handle high-risk situations
- Mobile command
- Uses advanced mobile technology truck
- Responds to critical incidents and complex scenes
- Strategic Information Center (SIC)
- Coordinates internal and external information-sharing about crimes and investigations
Mounted Patrol Unit
We use the size and ability of horses to help control crowds. Our unit is a highly visible part of the department. Our officers are fully-trained riders.
We are a resource for the Minneapolis Police Department with:
- Crowd control
- Crime control
- Search and rescue
- Large animal rescue
- Community policing
Canine Unit
Our canine unit serves Minneapolis and the surrounding community. We have specially-trained canines and handlers to make police work safer and more efficient.
Our canine teams are:
- Trained in patrol
- Narcotic detector-certified
- Explosive detector-certified
- Qualified tracking bloodhounds that are:
- ATF-certified single-purpose explosive detector canines, or
- Certified single-purpose narcotic detector canines
