What we do
The Forensic Services Division helps investigate crimes. This includes:
- Burglaries
- Robberies
- Homicides
We conduct casework in the following areas:
- Digital, video, imaging technology and analysis
- Firearms and toolmarks
- Friction ridge impressions (fingerprints)
- Scene investigation
Services we provide
Computer forensics
Retrieve and analyze data on digital devices, such as
- Cellphones
- Computers
- Thumb drives
Video forensics
- Examine video for evidence
- Isolate and enhance still video images
- Recover video from digital video recorders
- Perform compare and analyze video
- Analyze audio
Forensics garage
- Examine vehicles related to crimes
- Perform Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) verifications
Field operations
- Examine, document, process, and collect evidence. We do this work at crime scenes and in the lab.
- Analyze and compare friction ridge impressions (fingerprints)
- Conduct Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) search for potential matches of unknown fingerprints to known fingerprint records
- ABIS provides access to the regional and national identification databases
- We work 24/7, 365 days a year

Firearms and toolmarks
- Analyze and compare firearms evidence such as:
- Discharged cartridge casings
- Fired bullets
- Firearms
- Examine toolmarks
- Manage the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) program for the MPD
- NIBIN is used to detect associations between separate firearm incidents. This is done through firearm evidence.
