We explain your rights to medical insurance and other benefits when you no longer work for the City of Minneapolis.

Insurance coverage

When you leave the City, you can continue your coverage in the City's group benefits plans, including:

  • Medical
  • Dental
  • Life insurance

The length of continuation coverage is based on various factors, such as:

  • Whether you qualify for retirement
  • Which plan you are choosing to continue

You must elect to continue the coverage and pay the full cost of the benefit plans you elect to continue.

How to elect continuation of insurance

You will receive a continuation notice from BRI, the City's third party administrator, in the mail.

The notice will include:

  • Information about the benefits you are eligible to continue
  • Instructions for electing and paying for coverage

It is important that you pay close attention to the election and payment deadlines.

Resources

See our guides about benefits when you leave the City. One guide is for those retiring and the other is for those leaving but not retiring.

Sick leave and vacation

What happens to your sick leave and vacation when you leave the City is determined by:

  • The union contract for represented employees
  • City Ordinance for non-represented and appointed employees

Sick leave

Accumulated sick leave may be paid out according to the Sick Leave Severance Plan as detailed in union contracts and the City Ordinance.

Certain service requirements must be met to be eligible for a payout of sick leave. Typically:

  • You would have at least 20 years of qualified service as computed for retirement purposes, or you are at least 60 years old.
  • You would have at least 480 hours of accrued sick leave at the time of separation.

If you meet the above criteria, you are eligible to receive half of your sick leave balance.

How sick leave is paid

  • We determine sick leave pay by your union contract or the City Ordinance.
  • It will either be paid in cash or to a health care saving account administered by MSRS.

Vacation

  • All of your accumulated vacation will be paid out upon your separation.
  • Your union contract or City ordinance will detail whether it is paid in cash on your final paycheck, to the healthcare saving account at the Minnesota State Retirement System (MSRS) or both.
