Insurance

Medical insurance

The City of Minneapolis Medical Plan features one plan design with a choice of provider networks.

Dental insurance

The City offers eligible employees and their dependents dental insurance through Delta Dental. We offer 100% coverage for diagnostic and preventative services.

Life insurance

The City offers two types of life insurance plans to eligible employees:

Basic life insurance

  • Eligible employees automatically receive basic life insurance equal to one times your annual salary to the max of $50,000.
  • The City pays the full cost of this benefit.
  • All you need to do is list who you want as your beneficiary.

Optional employee life insurance

  • Eligible employees may purchase additional life insurance coverage equal to one, two, three, four or five times your annual salary.
  • The maximum coverage amount is $500,000.

Disability insurance

  • Long-term disability helps replace income for employees who are unable to work as a result of illness or injury.
  • If you qualify, monthly benefits equal to 60% of base pay are payable beginning after 90 days of disability.
  • The maximum long term disability benefit is $6,000 per month.
  • Benefits may be reduced by other income (such as pension or Social Security payments) you receive while you are disabled.

Most full-time City employees earn vacation according to the following schedule. Vacation time can vary by labor agreement.

Sick leave

Full-time employees

Most full-time City employees earn one day of sick leave for each calendar month worked.

Employees can use sick leave:

  • For their own illness, injury or medical appointments
  • To care for members of their immediate family

Sick leave balances can be carried over from year to year. Employees who accumulate 60 days of sick leave may have the option to:

  • Continue to earn sick leave
  • Receive partial cash payment for any sick leave accumulated in the preceding year above the 60-day minimum

Temporary employees

Temporary employees are not eligible for paid time off benefits such as vacation or holiday pay. However, a temporary employee may be eligible for sick leave per the Minneapolis Safe and Sick Time Ordinance.

Loan forgiveness

The City of Minneapolis qualifies as a public service employer under the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

  • City of Minneapolis employees may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on certain Federal Direct student loans.
  • Employees must make 120 qualifying payments on eligible loans while employed full-time.

Mental health and employee assistance

Employees receive wellbeing support, including:

  • Unlimited calls with a master level counselor available 24/7
  • Five in-person counseling sessions covered at 100%
  • 30-minute legal consultation at no cost (in person or over the phone)
  • 25% discount if you decide to use an attorney
  • Financial advisor support to help with debt, financial planning, foreclosure and more
  • Child care referrals and support to help take care of elderly parents
  • Community resources.

Emotional Wellbeing Solutions (EWS) is offered through Optum and is available to all City of Minneapolis employees.  It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and services are available by phone, online or through in-person appointments.
