Work towards a community safety ecosystem
- City Council approves site for South Minneapolis Community Safety Center.
- Safety Design & Implementation committees form:
- Conceptual services/resources group
- Infrastructure planning/design group
- Community relationships/communications group
- Finance group
- City Council approves $1 million to contract with New York University (NYU) School of Law Policing Project.
December 2023
Director hired and resulting work
- OCS hires Director of Community Safety Design & Implementation, Amanda Harrington.
- Work starts on the Lake Street Safety Center.
January 2024
Approach to putting work into action
- Phase one work begins on the community safety ecosystem.
- Set up processes and agreements for Office of Community Safety and Office of Public Service to get this work done.
- City signs purchase agreement for South Minneapolis Community Safety Center.
- This is located at 2633 Minnehaha Avenue.
- City begins asset and gaps analysis to understand what safety services already exist, what's missing, and how we can improve.
February 2024
Mission and values defined and group meetings
- Finalized the mission, vision, and values of the design and implementation work.
- City officially started working with NYU's Policing Project on:
- An asset and gaps analysis.
- Building data dashboards.
March 2024 - May 2024
Community engagement for South Minneapolis Community Safety Center
- Community engagement starts around the South Minneapolis Community Safety Center.
- Community engagement to learn what services are important to the community to have in the South Minneapolis Community Safety Center and Lake Street Safety Center.
- Work begins on safety pilots:
- Non-injury traffic accident response.
- Social worker in 911 to respond to mental health and substance use related calls.
- Community safety ambassadors in cultural districts.
June 2024 - July 2024
Review community input and lease approval
- We reviewed feedback received from the community.
- Lease approved for the Lake Street Safety Center.
- We started the fair application process for the South Minneapolis Community Safety Center.
- We are looking for professionals from organizations outside of the City.
- We started looking closer at safety services to:
- Make sure they are working.
- Figure out the best way to share that information with the community.
August 2024
Bring together City staff and community

- We expect to get the first draft of asset and gaps analysis report.

- We expect to get the final Action Report from NYU's Policing Project.
