What members will do

You will provide advice and recommendations to city leadership as we develop the community safety ecosystem.

Expectations

Members will work with City staff to:

  • Understand the City’s vision, strategy, and data. Then help develop and put in place a community safety ecosystem. 
  • Take part in monthly meetings. You may need to do work between meetings, such as reading reports. 
  • Track how the city implements the Safe and Thriving Communities Report and Plan.
  • Help identify gaps in the plan and give feedback to improve it.
  • Advise the mayor and the city council on recommendations related to policy, budget, implementation and oversight of the plan.
  • Provide feedback on all city-led safety center projects.
  • Bring information from this work group back to the community. 
  • Support organization of community engagement opportunities.

Meeting information

  • The work group will end after the Safe and Thriving Communities Report is implemented. It is expected to take about ten years.
  • A committee member can hold their position for ten years.
    • A member may end their position early if they choose.
  • Meetings are in-person.
  • Meetings will be action-based and limited to the purpose of this group.  
  • We can meet accessibility or language needs with timely notice.
  • Members will receive $100 for each full work group meeting.
  • Members may receive reimbursement for travel and parking if the budget allows.

Member representation

Qualifications

We're seeking 21 people to serve on the work group. The Safe and Thriving Communities Report recommends this work group should include government executives, key partners and stakeholders, and residents who represent the City's diverse communities.

Diverse backgrounds

We are looking for people who:

  • Have diverse backgrounds, life experiences, and perspectives.
  • Have a connection or work with diverse communities.

Experience

We are also looking for people who are subject matter experts in or have lived experience in:

  • Violence prevention services
  • Unarmed violence intervention services
  • Restorative justice and healing services
  • Criminal Justice system

Additional qualifications

In addition, we need specific qualities like: 

  • Youth perspective by a person aged 16-24 or is an advocate for youth.
  • Personal experiences with social, health or other issues. Also, the strategies and systems that seek to fix the issues. 

Background or expertise

The Safe and Thriving Communities work builds a community safety ecosystem that involves many issues. We hope work group members have a background in one or more of these areas:

  • Economic development
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Health
  • Housing
  • Income
  • Justice
  • Law enforcement
  • Restorative practices
  • Social services
  • Violence prevention

Nomination and appointment process

  • Thirteen seats will be nominated by each City Council member.
  • Two seats will be nominated by the mayor.
  • Six seats will be nominated by the Office of Community Safety.

The City Council and mayor will appoint members to serve on the work group. It will follow a standard legislative process.
