What we do

Criminal Division team

We represent the City to prosecute adults who commit crimes in the City that are:

  • Petty misdemeanors
  • Misdemeanors
  • Gross misdemeanors

  • Seek the best long-term outcomes.
  • Address the underlying needs of chronic offenders.
  • Use treatment courts and programming for other offenders.
  • Promote alternatives to jail time for minor offenses.
  • Find inequalities in the criminal justice system and lead efforts for reform.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office:

  • Prosecutes felony criminal cases
  • Handles all cases involving juvenile offenders (under 18 years old)

Examples of felonies and misdemeanors

Typical misdemeanor offenses

Examples include: 

  • Simple assault – domestic or non-domestic
  • Disorderly conduct
  • Trespassing
  • Consuming alcohol in public
  • Driver’s license or insurance violations
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Loitering with intent
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia in public
  • Violation of an order for protection or a harassment/restraining order
  • Theft or damage to property where the value of the stolen or damaged property is less than $1,000
  • Careless or reckless driving and most petty traffic offenses

Typical felony offenses

Examples include:

  • Robbery
  • Terroristic threats
  • Motor vehicle theft
  • Theft or damage to property where the value stolen or damaged is over $1000
  • Assault with a dangerous weapon
  • Criminal sexual conduct
  • Child neglect
  • Burglary
