Do your due diligence to make sure you get all needed permits.
Soil sample requirement for storage tank closure
You must take soil samples when you remove or abandon a storage tank that is greater than 1,100 gallons in size.
Details:
- Within 45 days, submit a report about the presence or absence of any contaminant release.
- We require at least one sample for fuel oil tanks of 1,100 gallons or less.
- Tanks regulated by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) need additional sampling.

Tank installation also requires inspection by Minneapolis Fire Inspection Services (FIS).
For a tank installation, submit both the Environmental Service and FIS applications to Environmental Health Permits. Both teams review and approve the application.
