The Minnesota lodging industry is an important partner in preventing sex trafficking.

Two groups co-created training about sex trafficking awareness:

  • The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH)
  • The Minnesota Lodging Association

Training requirements for businesses

State training

In Minnesota, youth who engage in prostitution are viewed as victims and survivors, not criminals.

Get approval from the Minnesota Department of Health

Businesses may use their own training if the training is approved by the MDH.

Required training topics

Approved training must include instruction on:

  • What sex trafficking is
  • How to recognize potential victims of sex trafficking
  • How to identify activities commonly associated with sex trafficking
  • Effective responses to trafficking situations, including how to report suspected sex trafficking to proper law enforcement officials

Excluded employees

Some employees do not need to attend sex trafficking prevention training.

This includes employees who:

  • Are under the age of 16 years, unless they clean guest rooms
  • Work only in a restaurant, providing catering services or both
  • Do not have contact with guests or guest rooms
