Violent Crimes

Why This Is Important

Violent crimes are the most dangerous and the most personal kinds of crime. They include homicide, rape, aggravated assault and robbery. Violent crime changes the lives of victims and also affects how safe people feel in their communities. Reducing violent crime makes a safe city even safer, and puts violent offenders where they belong — in prison.

What's Being Done

To reduce violent crime, the Minneapolis Police Department and its partners focus on several key strategies including:

  • Gangs: maintaining a comprehensive focus on gangs and their most active members to reduce violence and break up the infrastructure that drives many of these crimes.
  • Targeting chronic offenders.
  • Involving community members to focus on their crime concerns.

About This Measure

These data are collected from crime reports that are entered into the police department's Computer Assisted Police Report System (CAPRS). It is important to mention that not all victims report violent crimes, due to threats or other personal reasons. Violent crimes consist of the following types of crime: homicide, rape, aggravated assault and robbery.
