Sewer Cleanouts

What is a sewer cleanout?

A sewer cleanout is a capped pipe which provides access to a sewer line, allowing people to clean out blockages in the sanitary service.  It usually is 4" in diameter and has a steel or plastic cover over it.  Normally, this cleanout is found in the basement of your home.

How can I tell if my home has a sewer cleanout?

Minnesota plumbing code provides for at least two (2) cleanouts in the building drain; one (1) at or near the base of the stack and one (1) near the connection between the building drain and the building sewer.  The cleanout at the outside wall may be inside or outside your building.  Most cleanouts are located in the basement, so that the cleanout will be accessible in the winter months.

Search your basement for a capped 4" diameter pipe.  If you don't find one, check in the front yard.  Make sure to look under and behind bushes that are close to the walls of the building.

I cannot locate my sewer cleanout? What can I do?

If you are unsuccessful in locating your sewer cleanout, you either do not have one or it may be buried under dirt, concrete or carpet.  A plumber may be able to assist you in locating your sewer cleanout. .

Can the City of Minneapolis install a sewer cleanout if I do not have one?

No.  Sewer cleanouts belong to the property owner.  It is the responsibility of the property owner to install a building sewer cleanout.
