Roosevelt High School Safe Routes to School

Project Background

Roosevelt High School is the 2019 focus area for the City's Safe Routes to School Program and supports the City's commitment to Vision Zero, a policy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries on Minneapolis Streets.

City Staff are collecting data and engaging with Roosevelt staff, students and the surrounding community to identify potential treatments.

Project Scope

The project will focus on pedestrian improvements at 28th Avenue South between 40th Street and 41st Street.

Project Goals

The goals of the project include:

Proposed Improvements

Minneapolis Public Works is proposing safety improvements along 28th Ave S between 40th St E and 41st St E as part of a Safe Routes to School project focused on Roosevelt High School. The proposal includes the construction of two pedestrian median refuge islands on 28th Ave S to create safer, shorter crossings for people walking and to calm traffic.

To construct the medians, some on-street parking will be removed on 28th Ave S.  Public Works will create new parking areas on 28th Avenue south of the proposed medians and on adjacent side streets (40th St E).

Public Works staff worked with Roosevelt High School staff and Roosevelt students in addition to engaging surrounding stakeholders to identify the proposed improvements. In summer 2019, Public Works plans to construct the project.

For more information about the proposed concept, please see the Roosevelt SRTS Concept
