Who is eligible for a commercial vehicle permit?

All vehicles must be operating under a company registered with the State of Minnesota as a commercial property transporter or be a private carrier with legitimate delivery needs.

What are the requirements for receiving a commercial vehicle permit?

The vehicles must be operating under a company which has current motor carrier insurance or appropriate insurance as a private carrier.

The vehicle must be properly registered.

The vehicle must be used exclusively for the pickup or delivery of merchandise.

What are business uses that should NOT be using a commercial vehicle permit?

The vehicle must be used exclusively for the pickup or delivery of merchandise. Any other use, such as:

  1. Private Transportation;
  2. Service work;
  3. Delivery of equipment used for service work; (i.e. Maintenance Company dropping off cleaning equipment without attendant in vehicle;
  4. Use by salesman for dropping off displays, samples, or to take orders; is strictly prohibited and will result in denial of the application or revocation of the permit.

What other requirements are there for vehicles using a commercial vehicle permit?

Each vehicle must display the entity for which it is operating. Such identification may be of a temporary nature (magnetic sign, etc.) if professionally produced. This identification must be located on the front door of both sides of the vehicle. Lettering must be 2 to 2 1/2 inches in height.

How long are commercial vehicle permits good for?

The permit fee is for a twelve month period. Permits expire on the anniversary date of their issuance. Permits issued prior to the last five working days of each month will be inclusive of that month and the permit will expire one year from the last day of the previous month. Permits issued during the last five working days of each month will be treated as if they were issued on the first day of the following month. Thus, any permit issued during these last five working days of the month will expire one year from the last day of the month in which they were issued.

What are the permit fees for commercial vehicle permits?

Cost of permits are as follows:

  • $400.00 annually (includes up to 5 permits)
  • $20.00 annually for each additional permit
  • $12.00 temporary 30 day permit
  • $11.00 replacement permit

What is needed to receive a replacement permit?

Replacement permits will be issued only upon return of the previously issued permit.

Does our company need to notify anyone if a permit is no longer valid?

Does the commercial vehicle permit need to be displayed? How?

Commercial Permits must be permanently affixed to the vehicle. Magnetic attachments of Commercial Permits or decals applied in a manner that allows easy removal will result in suspension of the permit. Permits are to be affixed on each side of the vehicle between the wheel well and the front door at wheel height. All permits numbers must be affixed and correspond to the vehicle license number which appears on the application form when approved.

Parking privileges include 30 minutes in the following zones for loading and unloading: commercial loading zones, no parking zones, meter spaces before noon.

Parking privileges include 30 minutes in the following zones for loading and unloading: commercial loading zones, no parking zones, meter spaces before noon.

Where can commercial vehicles NOT park or use a permit?

Parking is not allowed in zones for U.S. Postal vehicles, turn lanes, rush hour zones, or alleys.
