Applying for Critical Parking Permits

To qualify you must be a licensed driver who lives at, or operates a business, within a Critical Parking Area. To get started, please Critical Parking Permitting site. During account creation you will be asked to enter your address. If the address is not located in a Critical Parking Area you will not be allowed to continue with the application.

Requirements

A valid government issued ID is required to purchase a permit along with additional supporting documents.

Required proof of residency to purchase a permit:

If your ID's current address matches the valid Critical Parking Area address on the application, only one other form of proof is required (see below). If the address does not match, then two additional forms are required from the following:

Steps:

  1. Determine that you meet the requirements.
  2. Gather information you'll need: Your vehicle information (make, model and year) and your license plate number.
  3. Create an account on the Critical Parking Permitting site.
  4. Enter your address (this will verify you reside at an eligible address).
  5. Select your desired permits and enter your vehicle information.
  6. Upload the documents indicated.
  7. Pay and await notification that your application has been approved.

If you cannot access the site or need to pay with cash or check, then you may apply/pay in person or apply/pay by mail.

If you can access the site but need to pay with cash or check, we encourage you to use the Critical Parking Permitting site and then complete your transaction in person or by mail.

Please note:

A false application is grounds for revocation of the permit and is punishable pursuant to Section 1.30 of the Minneapolis City Code: "Every person convicted of a violation of a provision of the traffic code, which regulates the standing or parking of vehicles, shall be punished by a fine of not more than $100.00."

Cash, checks or money orders are accepted. Make your check or money order payable to Minneapolis Critical Parking.

We strongly encourage printing and filling out the Critical Parking Area Permit application form (PDF) prior to arriving. 

Paid parking is available at on-street parking meters along 1st Avenue or in the Hawthorne Transportation Center parking ramp.  

Apply by Mail

Print and fill out the Critical Parking Area Permit application form (PDF) and enclose copies of your required documents, along with a check or money order and mail to:

Authorization for Business to Purchase Permits

Instead of proof of residency, a business must write a letter, on the business’s letterhead, authorizing the person applying for a permit.

Critical Parking Permits assigned to a business are not transferable between individuals. For questions, contact Traffic & Parking Services, 612-673-2886.

Visitor $10 1 calendar year
Service $10 1 calendar year
Temporary (2-30 day) $5 2 to 30 days
Temporary (1 day) $2 1 day

*In a newly-established or newly-modified area, there is an additional $10 surcharge for 1 year.

Renewals

All permit applications for the new system will be treated as “new” applications and will require full documentation review and the creation of an account on the site. Renewal notices are emailed to account holders through the email address that was entered upon account creation. For those that are unable to utilize the website, renewal notices will be mailed to their address on file.

Renewal notices are sent approximately one month prior to the expiration date. If your permit expires at the end of March, you should receive a renewal notice by March 1st. If a notice is not received, please contact the customer service line at (877) 817-3745.
