Absentee voting begins for Aug. 12 primary
The City has begun accepting absentee ballots for the Aug. 12, 2014 primary. Contests on the ballot in Minneapolis include federal, state, county, school board, and judicial offices. All Minneapolis voters are encouraged to vote in the primary and make their voice heard in selecting who will be on the ballot in the November general election.
Today, June 27, marks the opening of absentee voting for the primary. This is the first time voters won’t be required to provide a specific reason for not voting on primary day. That makes absentee voting available to all voters.
Absentee voting open to all voters
Voters can choose to vote absentee either by mail or in person. City Hall has now transformed into Minneapolis' largest polling place, open to all voters who want to come in to cast their absentee ballot in person. The Elections & Voter Services team has readied their office in room 201 to accommodate voters. They’ve also transitioned in-person absentee voting into the larger rotunda area of City Hall today, and can do so whenever large numbers of people come by.
Absentee ballots can be requested online or applications are available on our website and may be sent anytime leading up to the primary. Absentee voting for the Primary opens Friday, June 27 at the Minneapolis Office of Elections & Voter Services, 350 Fifth St. S. – Room 201.
Online tools help voters participate in the election
A full array of online tools are available to voters to make participating in this election even easier. Minneapolis voters can visit vote.minneapolismn.gov for access to all of these tools and complete information about voting.
The Voter Registration Lookup allows voters to enter their name, birthday, and address, and this tool will quickly tell voters whether they are registered at that address.
To find out where to vote, use the Minnesota Polling Place Finder. Eight new polling places have been added in Minneapolis since the 2013 election, and five other precincts have changed where the polling place is located, so all voters are encouraged to double check their polling location before Election Day.
In addition to now being able to request an absentee ballot by mail completely online with the absentee ballot request tool introduced by the Secretary of State last week, the Absentee Ballot Lookup is an easy and convenient way for voters to check on the status of their absentee ballot. To use the secure service, voters must provide the following information: first and last name (name must match voter’s name entered on the absentee ballot application or voter registration), full date of birth, and the same identification number the voter used on the absentee ballot application. The absentee ballot lookup tool informs absentee voters about the current status of their ballots with one of the following types of messages
- Your absentee ballot application has been received
- Your absentee ballot has been sent to you on (date)
- Your absentee ballot has been received
- Your absentee ballot will be counted
- Your absentee ballot has been rejected for (reason)
- Your replacement ballot has been sent on (date)

Are you pre-registered?
If you are not registered with your current name or address, you can register at government offices, libraries, park buildings, fire and police stations. More information is available on the elections pre-registration website. Registration cards in Hmong, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese are available on the elections language support website.
All individuals whose registration applications are received by elections officials by 5 p.m. on July 22 will be pre-registered for the Aug. 12 primary. Voters who newly register will receive a postcard notifying them where to vote. Pre-registration for the general election re-opens the day after the primary.
If you miss the deadline to pre-register, you may still be able to vote. Minnesota is one of several states with Election Day registration. Individuals may register at the polls on Election Day by providing one of the forms of identification required by Minnesota law. Beginning with this election, the list of documents allowed for proof of identify and address has been expanded, making it even easier to register at your polling place. City of Minneapolis seeks bilingual election judges
The City of Minneapolis is seeking bilingual election judges. Minneapolis seeks language support specifically in American Sign Language, and Spanish, Somali, Hmong, Vietnamese, Oromo, Laotian and Russian languages. If you are eligible to vote and are fluent in English and a second language, please contact the Minneapolis Office of Elections at 612-673-3870 or apply to be an election judge at vote.minneapolismn.gov/judges.
Selection and placement of judges is based on qualifications of applicants and party balance within the precinct. Preference will be given to those willing to serve a full day in a precinct with a vacancy.
