City leaders react to initial bonding proposal

Although Nicollet Mall redesign is not included in proposal, City will continue to pursue State bonding

In response to an initial state bonding proposal released today, which does not include funding for the redesign of Nicollet Mall,  city leaders released the following statements:

Mayor Betsy Hodges

“I’m disappointed funding for a redesign of Nicollet Mall is not included in this version of the bonding bill. This is still very early in the process, however, and at the same time, we are very encouraged that we were included in the Governor’s proposed bonding bill. We will continue to meet with State leaders to remind them that this is an important project for growing the city, the region and all of Minnesota.”

City Council President Barb Johnson

“Nicollet Mall is a tremendous benefit to our state, both economically and as a destination for people from across the region. It’s extremely disappointing that this project, which also brings significant private sector financing to the table, has not been included in this version of the bonding bill. However, we’ll continue to work with our delegation and partners from across the state to ensure this project gets the support it needs.”

City Council Vice President Elizabeth Glidden, chair of Intergovernmental Relations Committee

“We have a unique opportunity here to make Nicollet Mall an even more powerful economic driver for the state. This work is projected to result in 860 full-time jobs and more than $100 million in additional spending in Minnesota. The mall is the first impression of the state many visitors get. Making it a premier destination will benefit us all for decades to come.”

More information on the economic benefits of the Nicollet Mall redesign are on the City's website. You can also learn about the project at
