The average household size in Windom was 2.2 people in 2000, below the Minneapolis average. The average household size in Windom was also below the Minneapolis average in 1980 and at the same level in 1990.

The majority of the households in Windom are family households, comprising related individuals. The number of non-family households, however, is increasing. The number of people under the age of 65 and living alone also increased, while the number of people 65 and older living alone decreased.

In 2000, 37 percent of Windom householders lived alone. Households of people living alone increased by 3 percent between 1980 and 2000 but remain below the citywide percentage.

The percentage of people over the age of 65 living alone decreased over time. In 2000, 25 percent of the senior population in Windom lived alone. This trend was accompanied by declines in the overall senior population. The percentage of seniors living alone was 12 percent lower in Windom than Minneapolis in 2000.

The percentage of Windom families that have children grew by 14 percent from 1980 to 2000, when it increased above the city percentage. In 2000, 53 percent of Windom's families included at least one child.
